The University of South Florida (USF) hosted its annual High School CyberCon from July 22-26, 2024, at the Tampa campus. This innovative week-long program was designed to inspire and educate high school students (grades 9-12) from across the Tampa Bay area about the exciting and rapidly growing field of cybersecurity.

Our Founder Jared Knisley and CEO Ikwo Ibiam shared that they “really enjoyed meeting with local high school students, and teaching them about cyber security and career opportunities within the field. Opportunities to impact the upcoming generations is a privilege.”

Program Overview

CyberCon offered a unique, conference-like experience where students explored various aspects of cybersecurity through expert-led sessions, hands-on activities, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The program aimed to encourage young minds to consider careers in this critical field while providing them with practical knowledge and skills.

This year’s CyberCon welcomed 70 high school students, making it the largest event to date. The curriculum was supported by Florida CyberHub resources and lesson plans from the Florida Center for Instructional Technology, ensuring a comprehensive and up-to-date learning experience.

Industry Participation: Fizen™ Presentation

A notable feature of this year’s CyberCon was a presentation by Fizen™, a Tampa-based IT management and security company. Their session covered crucial cybersecurity topics including:

  • Cybersecurity basics and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
  • Ransomware and social engineering threats
  • Phishing, smishing, and common scams
  • Email authentication and spam filters
  • Vendor security and supply chain attacks
  • Vulnerability scanning and penetration testing
