Working completely remotely or partially remotely is a tough thing to do, but here we are in a time when this is becoming a new normal. Unfortunately, this new normal has presented a challenge for many companies looking to keep momentum going and at the very least maintain productivity.

Tools like Microsoft Teams and others have become essential to doing so, but how do you know they are being used properly?  Have you looked into ways to use them to eliminate email and increase your productivity?

Eliminating Email

One surprising bellwether that you should see is a significant decrease in your internal email threads, in fact you could go so far as to say that you should not be seeing any email threads internally at all!  Eliminating email can be a reality. It is a little crazy to think about because email has become such a norm in online communication, but these productivity programs have the architecture to almost eliminate the need entirely for those nightmarish infinite email threads. You know the ones that you must click through response after response, trying to follow a train of thought or find a document version that is the correct one to be using. They can be awful, especially when you are not able to just get up and go drop by your co-workers’ desk to get some clarification.

If you are not seeing this change, then it is most likely that you are not getting the most out of those tools or they just are not set up properly. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft said, “Switching from offices before the pandemic to an all-remote setup would be replacing one dogma with another dogma…what I miss when you walk into a physical meeting, you’re able to talk and connect with people before and after the meeting…that’s tough to replace virtually as are other soft skills crucial to managing and mentoring.”
